Visit to Central Buddhist Monastery in Tuva

The Dalai Lama blessed the idea and the site of the monastery during his only visit to Tuva on September 21, 1992. The name of the temple complex is translated from the Tibetan language as “the abode of explanation
and practice of the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha.”
The monastery is being developed as a religious, pilgrimage and tourist complex. Its construction began in 2014, and the grand opening took place in April 2023. Today, it is the largest Buddhist
monastery in Russia, with an area of more than nine hectares. The main building
with a 10-metre statue of Buddha is 56 metres high and has 12 floors. The monastery houses the exposition of the Tuva National Museum comprising three
thousand exhibits.
